La Mesa calls itself the “Jewel of the Hills,” and the nickname is earned. This city of 60,000 sits on a series of rolling hills and ridgelines between Mission Valley and El Cajon, with elevations ranging from 500 feet near I-8 to over 1,000 feet at the top of Mount Helix on its southern border. That terrain is beautiful, panoramic views, tree-lined streets, a charming downtown village, but it creates real challenges for vehicles and for tow truck operators who do not know the streets.
RJ Towing dispatches to La Mesa from our base at 2881 G St in San Diego, roughly 8-10 miles east on I-8. The route is direct: I-8 East through Mission Valley, past SDSU and the College Area, and into La Mesa at the Spring Street, Fletcher Parkway, or Jackson Drive exits. On a clear run, our trucks reach the I-8 corridor through La Mesa in 15 minutes. The further you are from the freeway, up into the residential hills south of University Avenue, out toward Lake Murray, or toward the Mount Helix area, the longer it takes, but we cover all of La Mesa within 22 minutes under normal conditions.
La Mesa's hilly terrain means steeper grades on residential streets, more stress on brakes and transmissions, and parking situations that turn a simple dead battery into a complicated recovery when your car is pointed downhill on a 15-degree grade. Our drivers know these streets. We have been serving La Mesa for over 15 years, and the hills that surprise other tow companies are routine for us.
The La Mesa Village along La Mesa Boulevard is the commercial and social heart of the city. Restaurants, antique shops, and the weekly farmers market bring traffic and pedestrians into a walkable district with narrow streets, angled parking, and tight spaces. Breakdowns and lockouts in the Village require a tow truck operator who can maneuver carefully without blocking the entire street. We do this regularly.
