Interstate 15 is San Diego's primary inland north-south freeway: 40+ miles from the I-8 interchange through Miramar Hill, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Escondido. Towing on Interstate 15 in San Diego: The Inland Commuter Corridor
Interstate 15 is San Diego's primary inland north-south freeway. It runs approximately 40 miles through the county, from its interchange with I-8 and I-805 near Mission Valley northward through Miramar, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and Escondido before continuing toward Riverside County. For the hundreds of thousands of San Diegans who live in the inland communities and commute south to downtown, Kearny Mesa, Sorrento Valley, or the bases, I-15 is a daily reality.
It is also a freeway that punishes vehicles. The Miramar Hill grade between the I-8 interchange and the SR-52 junction is a sustained climb that overheats engines in summer traffic. The long, straight sections through Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo encourage speeds above 80 mph, leading to high-severity tire blowouts and single-vehicle accidents. Construction zones shift regularly, the I-15 Express Lanes project reshaped the corridor and its shoulders. And the sheer commute distances (Escondido to downtown is 30+ miles each way) mean that aging vehicles accumulate stress miles fast.
RJ Towing covers every mile of I-15 through San Diego County. From the I-8 interchange downtown to the county line north of Escondido, we respond to breakdowns, accidents, flat tires, overheating, and dead batteries along the entire corridor. Call (619) 872-5285 and we send the closest available truck.

I-15 San Diego: The Complete Corridor (South to North)
Downtown / I-8 Interchange to Miramar Hill (Miles 0-8)
I-15 begins at the interchange with I-8 in Mission Valley, one of the busiest junctions in the county, and immediately begins climbing northward through Kearny Mesa toward Miramar. The grade is not extreme, but the combination of heavy traffic, frequent lane changes for the SR-163 exit, and stop-and-go congestion creates a steady flow of tow calls.
Key exits: I-8 interchange, Friars Road, Aero Drive (Kearny Mesa), Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Miramar Road.
RJ response: 12-18 minutes.
Miramar Hill to Scripps Ranch / SR-56 (Miles 8-16)
This is the Miramar Hill section, the most demanding grade on I-15. The freeway climbs past MCAS Miramar, through Scripps Ranch, to the SR-56 interchange. The Express Lanes run through the center median, creating a complex lane configuration that confuses out-of-area drivers.
Problem spot: The Miramar Hill northbound grade between Miramar Road and Scripps Poway Parkway is the I-15 equivalent of the I-8 Alpine grade. Vehicles with marginal cooling systems overheat here regularly. Add a trailer, a fully loaded SUV, or a vehicle with 150,000 miles, and the risk increases significantly.
RJ response: 18-25 minutes.
Rancho Bernardo to Escondido (Miles 16-28)
I-15 flattens out through the Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Peñasquitos area before entering Escondido. Heavy commuter traffic during peak hours. The road surface is better maintained than the Miramar section, but the distances and speeds mean breakdowns involve higher-mileage vehicles.
Key exits: Rancho Bernardo Road, Bernardo Center Drive, West Bernardo Drive, Via Rancho Parkway, Valley Parkway, El Norte Parkway.
RJ response: 22-30 minutes to Rancho Bernardo, 28-35 minutes to Escondido.
North of Escondido to County Line (Miles 28-40+)
I-15 continues north through the San Pasqual Valley and toward the Riverside County line. Less densely developed, longer distances between exits, less cell phone coverage in some areas.
RJ response: 30-40 minutes. This is our extended coverage area, we reach it, but response times are at the outer edge of our standard window.
I-15 Commuter Breakdown Patterns
We have tracked I-15 tow calls over years of service and the patterns are consistent:
Monday morning, northbound, 6-8 AM
Vehicles that sat over the weekend with marginal batteries die in the cold morning air. Dead battery jump calls peak on Monday mornings.
Friday afternoon, southbound, 3-6 PM
The longest, hottest commute of the week. Vehicles that have been accumulating heat stress all week overheat in the Friday southbound crawl through Miramar. Overheating calls peak on Friday afternoons.
Summer weekdays, both directions, Miramar Hill
Ambient temperatures in the Miramar corridor hit 90-100 degrees. Add stop-and-go traffic, a 3-4% grade, and an engine running at high RPM, and cooling systems are tested to their limits. This is our highest-volume I-15 tow zone from June through October.
Construction zone transitions
When construction zones shift lane configurations on I-15, there is always a spike in minor collisions for the first 2-3 weeks until drivers adapt to the new pattern.

Yes. Express Lane emergency bays are accessible by our tow trucks. Tell our dispatcher you are in the Express Lane median and we coordinate access. Response times may be slightly longer due to the access logistics, but we handle Express Lane calls regularly.
Pull over immediately. Do not continue driving. Turn off the AC and turn the heater to max to draw heat from the engine. Call (619) 872-5285 and wait for the engine to cool. We will assess on-site, sometimes a coolant top-off and a slow drive to a mechanic is possible; sometimes a tow is the only safe option. Our driver makes an honest recommendation.
Yes. The I-8/I-15 interchange is in our core service area, 10-15 minute response. It is one of the highest-accident- density interchanges in the county and one of our most frequent dispatch locations.
If you drive I-15 daily, especially through the Miramar section, prioritize: cooling system maintenance (flush every 30,000 miles), transmission fluid condition (especially on vehicles over 80,000 miles), tire condition (I-15 debris and construction zones eat tires), and battery testing before summer and winter. A $15 battery test can prevent a $150 tow call.
