Towing on Interstate 5 in San Diego: 57 Miles of the West Coast's Busiest Freeway
Interstate 5 is the spine of San Diego County. It enters from the south at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the busiest international land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, and runs 57 miles north through downtown, the coastal communities, and Camp Pendleton before crossing into Orange County. More than 300,000 vehicles per day travel sections of I-5 through San Diego, making it one of the most heavily trafficked freeways in California.
It is also one of the most common locations for vehicle breakdowns, accidents, and tow calls in the county. The combination of high traffic volume, construction zones that shift monthly, merge points that force sudden braking, and the sheer length of the corridor means that someone is stranded on I-5 in San Diego at virtually every hour of every day.
RJ Towing covers every mile of I-5 through San Diego County. Our base at 2881 G St in the 92102 zip code puts us within 10-15 minutes of the I-5 in central San Diego, and we position trucks strategically to reach north and south county locations within our 15-30 minute response window. We know every exit, every safe pullover location, every problem spot, and every alternate route when traffic shuts down a section of the freeway.

I-5 San Diego: The Complete Corridor Map (South to North)
San Ysidro Border Crossing to Chula Vista (Miles 0-8)
The southernmost section of I-5 starts at the Mexican border. Traffic approaching the border backs up for miles during peak crossing hours (4-7 PM northbound, 6-9 AM southbound), creating a slow-speed gauntlet where engines overheat from idling, batteries die, and fender benders happen in stop-and- go queues.
Key exits: San Ysidro Boulevard, Dairy Mart Road, Palm Avenue (Imperial Beach access), Main Street, Bay Boulevard.
RJ response: 12-18 minutes from our base. Cross-border service available via our Tijuana phone: (664) 801-9382.
National City to Downtown San Diego (Miles 8-15)
I-5 runs through National City past the Mile of Cars, through Barrio Logan under the Coronado Bridge, and into downtown. This section includes the I-5/I-805 merge and the I-5/SR-54 interchange, two of the most congested junctions in the county.
Accident-prone areas: The I-5/I-805 merge southbound is consistently one of the highest-accident intersections in San Diego. The I-5/SR-54 junction westbound requires three lane changes in a quarter mile, collisions happen here weekly.
RJ response: 10-15 minutes. This is our backyard.
Downtown to Mission Bay (Miles 15-20)
I-5 passes through the I-5/I-8 interchange, the most complex freeway junction in central San Diego, and continues north past Old Town, through Mission Bay, and toward Pacific Beach and La Jolla.
Accident-prone areas: The I-5/I-8 interchange is the most dangerous junction on the entire I-5 San Diego corridor. Southbound I-5 traffic merging with westbound I-8 traffic funnels into a compressed merge zone where speed differentials between slow right-lane traffic and fast left- lane traffic cause sideswipe and rear-end collisions daily.
RJ response: 12-18 minutes.
La Jolla to Sorrento Valley (Miles 20-27)
I-5 follows the coast through La Jolla, passing UCSD and the Torrey Pines area before descending into the Sorrento Valley low point, a stretch that floods during heavy rain and is under near-permanent construction due to road widening projects.
Problem spot: The Sorrento Valley segment between La Jolla Village Drive and Via de la Valle is the most construction-impacted section of I-5 in the county. Lane configurations change, shoulders disappear, and breakdown pullover options are extremely limited. If you break down here, call (619) 872-5285 immediately, do not attempt to walk along the construction zone.
RJ response: 18-25 minutes.
Del Mar to Encinitas (Miles 27-37)
I-5 runs through Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Encinitas. This stretch is relatively straight with good shoulders, but high speeds (70-80 mph actual travel speed) mean that breakdowns happen at velocity and accidents are higher-severity.
Key exits: Via de la Valle (Del Mar Fairgrounds), Lomas Santa Fe Drive, Birmingham Drive, Encinitas Boulevard, Leucadia Boulevard.
RJ response: 25-35 minutes.
Carlsbad to Oceanside / Camp Pendleton (Miles 37-57)
The northern terminus of I-5 in San Diego County. I-5 passes through Carlsbad, enters Oceanside, passes Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, and crosses into Orange County.
Key exits: Palomar Airport Road, Cannon Road, Carlsbad Village Drive, Oceanside Boulevard, Mission Avenue, Harbor Drive, Camp Pendleton main gate.
RJ response: 28-40 minutes. For Camp Pendleton main gate area, military personnel should identify the base gate to our dispatcher for access coordination.
