Flatbed Only for Every Electric and Hybrid
EV and Hybrid Towing San Diego, Flatbed Only for Every Electrified Vehicle
Every electric vehicle and hybrid requires flatbed transport: Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, Ford Mach-E and Lightning, Rivian R1T/R1S, Lucid Air, BMW i-series, Volvo PHEVs, Hyundai/Kia E-GMP, Polestar, and every new platform in between. We understand 12V auxiliary systems, regenerative braking, and why flatbed is the only safe method.
Why Every EV and Hybrid Requires Flatbed
Call (619) 872-5285 and we dispatch a flatbed for your EV or hybrid, every time. Dragging wheels with an attached electric motor causes inverter or transaxle damage ($2,000 on a Prius to $15,000+ on a Rivian). We carry 12V jump equipment for dead auxiliary batteries and know the specific procedures for every major platform. Grúa para autos eléctricos, llámanos.

EV and Hybrid Towing in San Diego: Every Electric and Plug-In Vehicle Requires a Flatbed
San Diego County has one of the highest electric vehicle adoption rates in the nation. The combination of year-round mild weather, high household income in coastal communities, California's ZEV mandate, and an expanding charging infrastructure means EVs and hybrids are not niche vehicles here, they are everywhere. Toyota Prius hybrids on every block in North Park. Nissan Leafs charging at apartment complexes in Mira Mesa. Chevy Bolts in University City. Ford F-150 Lightnings in Scripps Ranch. Rivian R1Ts in Rancho Santa Fe. BMW iX SUVs in La Jolla. Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrids in Carmel Valley.
And every single one of these vehicles, pure EV or hybrid, requires specific towing procedures that most tow companies either do not know or do not follow.
The fundamental issue is the same across all electrified drivetrains: electric motors connected to the wheels. When a conventional tow truck lifts one axle and drags the other two wheels on the pavement, those wheels turn the electric motor in reverse, generating uncontrolled electricity (regenerative energy) that feeds back into the power electronics. On a pure EV, this can damage the inverter, motor controller, or battery management system. On a hybrid, it can damage the hybrid drive unit, the regenerative braking system, or the high-voltage battery pack. Repair costs range from $2,000 on a Prius hybrid transaxle to $15,000+ on a Rivian or Lucid drive unit.
The solution is flatbed towing, every time, no exceptions. RJ Towing has been towing EVs and hybrids across San Diego for years. We flatbed every electrified vehicle. We carry the 12V jump equipment for dead auxiliary batteries. We know the specific procedures for each major platform. Call (619) 872-5285 and your EV or hybrid is in the right hands.

Which EVs and Hybrids Does RJ Towing Handle?
Toyota Hybrids (Prius, Camry, RAV4, Highlander Hybrids)
Toyota hybrids are the most common electrified vehicles on San Diego roads. Toyota's hybrid synergy drive uses an electric motor connected to the front wheels through a power-split device. Toyota's owner's manual recommends flatbed towing for all hybrid models.
Common scenario: Your 2019 Prius will not start in the Costco parking lot in Mission Valley. The 12V auxiliary battery has died. The hybrid system cannot initialize without it. We arrive, jump the 12V, and either restart the car or load it onto the flatbed.
Nissan Leaf and Ariya
The Leaf is San Diego's most popular affordable EV. Front-mounted electric motor driving the front wheels. Dragging the front wheels spins the motor backward and risks inverter damage. The Ariya uses a dual-motor AWD system on some trims. Both require flatbed.
Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV
GM explicitly requires flatbed towing and states that towing with wheels on the ground "may cause damage to the electric drive motor and related components."
Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning
The Mach-E is RWD or AWD depending on trim. The Lightning is AWD with dual motors. Both are heavy vehicles (Mach-E: 4,400-4,800 lbs; Lightning: 6,100-6,600 lbs). Ford's manual states flatbed only for both models.
Rivian R1T and R1S
Quad-motor or dual-motor platform with motors at the front and rear axles. R1T weighs 7,100+ lbs. Flatbed is the only option, and it must be rated for the weight. Our medium- duty-capable flatbed handles Rivian's weight without issue.
Lucid Air
Dual motors (front and rear) on most trims, 4,800-5,200 lbs. Extremely low ride height requires careful flatbed approach angle.
BMW i4, iX, i5, i7
BMW's electric lineup uses eDrive motors connected to the driven wheels. xDrive (AWD) variants have motors on both axles. All require flatbed.
Volvo Plug-In Hybrids (XC60, XC90, S60 PHEV)
Conventional engine on the front axle, electric motor on the rear axle. Effectively AWD when the hybrid system is active. Flatbed only.
Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona Electric
E-GMP platform (Ioniq 5, 6) uses RWD or AWD. Kona Electric is FWD. All require flatbed per the owner's manual.
Kia EV6, EV9, Niro EV
Same E-GMP platform as Hyundai for EV6 and EV9. Niro EV is a different platform but same flatbed requirement.
Polestar 2 and Polestar 3
Dual-motor AWD on most configurations. Flatbed required. Polestar 2's 12V battery is under the hood, similar to a Volvo.
Other EVs and PHEVs
VW ID.4, Genesis GV60, Cadillac Lyriq, Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra, Mazda MX-30, Honda Prologue, Acura ZDX, and any other electrified vehicle on San Diego roads. Flatbed only. For Tesla, see our dedicated Tesla towing page.
What Is the 12V Auxiliary Battery and Why Does It Matter?
Every EV and hybrid has two battery systems: the high- voltage traction battery (the large battery pack that powers the electric motors) and a conventional 12V auxiliary battery that powers the car's electronics, door locks, screens, lights, computers, and crucially, the ability to shift out of park.
When the 12V battery dies, the vehicle becomes completely unresponsive. The doors may not open from outside. The screen is black. The car will not shift to neutral. The parking brake may be electronically locked. You cannot activate Transport Mode or any tow-preparation function.
This happens more often than most EV owners expect. The 12V battery in most EVs is a small, conventional lead-acid or AGM battery that lasts 3-5 years. Unlike in a conventional car where the alternator constantly charges the 12V battery, EVs use a DC-DC converter to step down voltage from the traction battery, and if the traction battery's state of charge is too low, or the DC-DC converter has an issue, the 12V battery drains.
RJ Towing drivers carry portable 12V jump packs compatible with every EV and hybrid platform. We know the 12V battery location and access point for each major model. Jump the 12V, restore basic electronic function, activate tow mode if applicable, and load onto the flatbed. Call (619) 872-5285 and describe your vehicle, we bring the right equipment.
Why Flatbed for Hybrids Too, Not Just Pure EVs?
Some hybrid owners assume that because their car has a gasoline engine, it can be towed like a conventional car. This is incorrect for most hybrids and dangerous for some.
Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive: Electric motor is integrated into the transaxle. Spinning the drive wheels spins the motor. Motor generates current that has nowhere safe to go when the hybrid system is not running. Flatbed.
Honda Hybrid (Accord, CR-V): Similar integrated motor-transaxle design. Flatbed recommended by Honda.
Hyundai / Kia Hybrid: Electric motor integrated into the transmission. Flatbed required per manufacturer documentation.
Ford Hybrid: eCVT transaxle with integrated motor. Ford recommends flatbed.
Plug-In Hybrids with rear electric motors (Volvo, BMW, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid): The rear axle has an independent electric motor. Towing with the rear wheels on the ground spins this motor even if the gasoline engine is off. Flatbed required.
The rule is simple: if the vehicle has an electric motor connected to any axle, those wheels must not spin on the ground during towing. Flatbed eliminates the risk entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions About EV and Hybrid Towing
In the vast majority of cases, it is the 12V auxiliary battery. A dead 12V battery makes the car completely unresponsive, no dash lights, no push-button start response, no door lock function. A failing hybrid (high-voltage) battery usually presents differently, the car starts but shows a warning triangle, reduced power, or the engine runs constantly. Call (619) 872-5285 and our driver can diagnose which battery is the issue on arrival. If it is the 12V, we jump it on the spot. If it is the hybrid battery, we flatbed to a dealer or hybrid specialist.
No, the physics of EV charging make roadside charging impractical. EV batteries require high-voltage DC charging that only fixed Supercharger, CCS, or CHAdeMO stations provide. A portable generator cannot deliver the voltage or amperage needed for meaningful range. What we can do is flatbed your EV to the nearest compatible charging station so you are back on the road as quickly as possible.
No. We charge our standard flatbed rate for all vehicles regardless of drivetrain type. There is no EV surcharge, no hybrid premium, and no special fee for 12V battery work. The flatbed rate applies equally to a Prius and a Porsche Taycan.
Pull over safely (right shoulder or exit ramp if possible). Turn on hazard lights. Call (619) 872-5285. We will flatbed your EV to the nearest compatible charging station. For Tesla, see our Tesla towing page for Supercharger locations. For CCS-compatible vehicles (most non-Tesla EVs), we deliver to the nearest Electrify America, ChargePoint, or EVgo station.
The towing method is the same, flatbed for both. The only difference is that a plug-in hybrid with a charged gasoline tank can sometimes be restarted at the roadside if the issue is a dead 12V battery (we jump the 12V, the gasoline engine starts, the hybrid system reinitializes). Pure EVs with a dead traction battery cannot be restarted roadside and need transport to a charging station.
