Mira Mesa is a large residential and commercial community in north-central San Diego, stretching from I-15 on the east to I-805 on the west, with Mira Mesa Boulevard running east-west through the center and connecting the two freeways. Over 80,000 people live here, one of the most populated neighborhoods in the city, and tens of thousands more commute through daily on their way to the tech companies, defense contractors, and business parks that line Mira Mesa Boulevard, Sorrento Valley Road, and Camino Ruiz.
The combination of heavy residential population, high commuter traffic, and two major freeways makes Mira Mesa a consistent source of towing and roadside calls. I-15 through Mira Mesa carries over 200,000 vehicles per day, and the stretch between the Mira Mesa Boulevard exit and the Mercy Road/Scripps Poway Parkway interchange is one of the most congested corridors in San Diego County during peak hours. Vehicles overheat in stop-and-go traffic, run out of fuel while idling in gridlock, and get rear-ended in chain-reaction slowdowns. The I-805/Mira Mesa Boulevard interchange is similarly high-volume, with short merge distances that catch out-of-area drivers off guard.
Beyond the freeways, Mira Mesa Boulevard itself is a 4-mile commercial strip of strip malls, restaurants, auto repair shops, grocery stores, and business parks. Parking lot fender benders, dead batteries from midday shopping trips in the sun, and lockouts at the dozens of businesses along the boulevard are daily occurrences.
Sorrento Valley, which sits along the southern edge of Mira Mesa, is home to major tech and biotech employers, Qualcomm facilities, biotech campuses, and dozens of smaller firms. Employees commuting via Sorrento Valley Road, Mira Mesa Boulevard, or I-805 face their own set of vehicle issues: dead batteries after a 10-hour workday, flat tires from construction debris near the ongoing development projects, and overheated engines on the climb up the grade from Sorrento Valley to the Mira Mesa mesa top.
